These are the voyages of the cupcake Enterprise

I haven't done a food tutorial thing in a looooong time (Christmas, I think?) so here we go!

Alright! Before you go on this expedition, you will need:

Cupcakes:
1/2 cup butter (softened)
3/4 to 1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup cold milk
red, yellow, and blue food dye
Frosting: (this makes a considerable amount, almost enough for two batches)
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
3-4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
up to 4 tablespoons of milk or cream
red, yellow, and blue food dye
Optional/Decorations
luster dust or edible sparkles

fondant (red, blue, and yellow)

*You can omit the food dye at any or all steps; we chose to do so for the frosting*

Recipes from cooks.com and savorysweetlife.com :)

Okay, before you even start, if you want to make little insignias to put on top of your cupcakes, you’ll need to get out your fondant. If you’re lucky enough to have a Starfleet cookie cutter or something, definitely use that. For those of us who aren’t that fortunate, we can trace cutouts of them with the tip of a knife or a mini pizza cutter (it took forever). Once you’re happy with your designs, you can put them on parchment paper or a Silpat and let them dry the whole time you bake and assemble the cupcakes.

In progress...

It may be a good idea to do this even the night before you plan to bake so that they dry completely and don’t flop over the cupcake.

Okay, to baking. Set your phasers to stun at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line twelve regular-sized tins with cupcake liners (silver ones are really cool because, you know, it’s Star Trek). In one bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar together, and then add the eggs (one at a time), stirring after each addition. Then add the vanilla. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until smooth. Then, mix in the milk.

Now, divide the batter into three smaller bowls and mix in the red, yellow, and blue food colorings. There should be about four cupcakes per color.
(Yes, I actually did color-coordinate the bowls)

Now spoon the batter into the liners and bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 12-15 minutes. Let them cool for a few minutes, then take them out of the cupcake tin. Put them on a wire rack to cool completely (otherwise the frosting will melt and it’ll just be a mess).

To make the frosting, beat the butter for several minutes to whip it. Then, add the powdered sugar slowly so you don’t get a sweet explosion over everything. Make sure that the mixer is on the lowest possible setting as you begin. Then, add the salt, vanilla, and a tablespoon of milk/cream and increase the mixer speed. If the frosting is too thick, add a bit more milk/cream, (gradually) until it is the desired texture.

Separate the frosting into three bowls (if desired) and mix in the red, yellow, and blue until it is the desired color. Use a large star tip (ha – puns) and a piping bag to add the frosting to their corresponding colored cupcakes. We had almost no time at the end so we just spread it over... so sorry about that :)

Photoshoot time!

Enjoy!

P.S. We had a tragic accident while transporting the cupcakes:
Some cupcakes fell onto the stove...
Do you see what color they are?
They're redshirts.

Miscellany

I never posted my pictures from the skating show on May first (whoops). I skated to the Sherlock music during the cabbie chase scene, but now I'm skating to "I am the Doctor" for my new test. I'm hoping to use my dress pattern to make a themed skating dress at some point, but I'm not that talented at sewing, so...

Also, have I ever mentioned that I have a bunny named Bluebell? Like the one in Sherlock except that he's a boy (I know, we got him from the MSPCA four years ago with that name). You can imagine my shock when I watched Baskervilles the first time to basically see my rabbit onscreen.

See?

Fun fact: This was my third shot with my new camera! It was the point where I realized that there were more effective modes for pets than just the auto.

Okay.

There's not really any point to this post except that I keep thinking of things as I go along. So, ummm... what else?

Oh yeah! I'm hopefully going to be making Starfleet cupcakes tomorrow (maybe with Fiona!), so stay tuned. Goodnight!

Also!

I just started a photography blog for friends and family, so if you want to see it, it's here. There's nothing posted yet, but I'll probably add some soon. Bye!

I'm back (again)

I have no excuse. Sorry about that. But in other news, I got an awesome camera! It's a Canon EOS Rebel T3i and it's fantastic. 5/5 stars, seriously. I went on a five day camping trip and I have the most beautiful pictures that I have ever taken. The battery hasn't dropped below a full charge since I last plugged it it in over two weeks ago. I'm no camera expert, but it is really easy to use and takes great shots even with the simplest Auto mode.

Anyway. So ninth grade is over, I got A's in all my classes last semester, and summer has begun. Finally! I've decided to do what Fiona has done and try to do at least one post per week. I'll probably forget, but I'll try my best!

I'll show you some pictures from the last few weeks, shall I?

This is a sunset on July 5th:
The lens flare makes me feel like I'm in Star Trek (oh, that's another new obsession, by the way).

And another sunset because it was absolutely beautiful. I actually don't know who the girl in the picture is, but she was just standing on the rocks and I thought it was pretty (plus bonus lens flare).

This is one of our dogs, Dodger, in Quincy Market two weeks ago.

...And a flower in our yard. The Flower mode on the camera is fantastic. I have more pictures that show the tiny granules of pollen on the petals of some other flowers. There's a ton of detail.

I hope you liked them and I'll hopefully post more soon! Bye!

I Live!!!

Hi there!
Sorry about the really long break between these posts... I've been feeling the freshman burden (also I keep forgetting). Here are some sketches I've been doing recently... they're made with Sharpie pen on oaktag paper.
Sherlock, obviously!
And I love drawing herringbone, so here's another, with the caption, "It's an ear hat, John!"
I also made a bag (well, printed on it) and it looks like this:
I've been slowly adding more prints, so I'll have a better-quality and more complete picture eventually, maybe this weekend. That's all for now, but I'll write soon! Bye!
